Artists statement

I am a freelance Illustrator and Printmaker living and working in Somerset. My work is generally inspired by the design and advertising from the fifties and sixties – particularly the film titles of Saul Bass and the Graphic Design of Paul Rand. I chiefly work with Photoshop, as it allows me to manipulate my own drawings with colour, text and pattern. I also work predominantly in silkscreen, a print method I specialised in, during my MA course. I draw great inspiration from popular culture and observations from everyday life, adding my own contemporary but often very witty twists. My love of colour is evident in my images – “colour can often change our moods, so I choose to use vibrant and vivacious colours to represent optimism”.

My work has featured in many magazines including Top Gear, Elle Decoration, Prima, Spirit and Destiny and Redbook in the United States. I have also designed for the contemporary greeting card publishers Artists Cards, Soul Trader and Impress Publishing.

The work featured on this website, is a representation of my illustrative style with the use of witty phrases, and produced on a ceramic tile. The print process was introduced to me at UWE during my MA course. Firstly I produce my images digitally and then they are printed onto ceramic transfer paper. Next the image is applied to the tile, which is then fired as a normal ceramic object would be. I have found this surface to be a wonderful alternative to paper: it is strong, enhances colour and is incredibly flat! Two of my designs were exhibited at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol.
