Catherine Sutcliffe-Fuller
Having grown up in the countryside I am sensitive to an ever-changing landscape.
I have visited Dalby forest, in North Yorkshire since I was a small child and remain absorbed by its immense variety of texture, line and tone.
Practicing as a Fine Artist Printmaker I use two processes, etching and linocut to convey my interest in the environment. With these techniques I make prints inspired by the life of the forest.
My work however is not just about trees! I have an interest in conveying how man is shaping the environment both in leisure and at work.
I draw directly onto metal and lino plates, using these as the pages of my sketchbook.
The physical act of making a linocut or an etched plate is mirrored in the subject of the woodland, the cutting back, the reduction and then layering of one technique and image upon another reflecting the process of the land.
The process of printmaking is as important as the subject matter and I have developed a technique that combines the use of line (etching) mark making (lino) and colour (aquatint) to convey a sense of harmony and depth to my work.
All of my prints are originals. The images have been created by my own hand to produce a limited number of prints and, by nature they all vary slightly.
Each plate takes a number of weeks to cut or etch followed by 60 minutes of inking, wiping and printing for each individual image to form part of a small edition.
Unlike reproduction prints these are not copies of paintings but hand produced works.
