Meet The Artist

Clare Caulfield

Artists statement

Clare Caulfield is an Artist and Printmaker who graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Surface Pattern Design from Staffordshire University in 2000.
Since then Clare has continued developing her highly individual drawing style and has exhibited throughout the country with galleries including the Crafts Council Gallery Shop and CCA Galleries at The Affordable Art Fair in London.

Clare’s work documents her travels to some of the world’s greatest cities including Venice, Florence, New York and London.
Most recently Paris has provided much inspiration for a series of new pen & watercolour paintings from compositions of Notre Dame to bustling streetscenes.

Drawing has always been a very important part of Clare’s work. She is fascinated by architecture be it the Midtown skyscrapers of Manhattan, The Grand Canal Venice or simply capturing Parisian life outside a brightly canopied pavement café, from which she strives to create spontaneous lively linework. She enjoys the scratchy line quality achieved using dip pen & ink, the weight of the line altering with the amount of pressure applied.

Clare also uses various printmaking techniques within her work. Her love of drawing and use of line have been developed into Drypoints and Screenprints.
Drypoint is a method of Intaglio Printmaking in which the Artist draws by scratching directly onto a metal plate with an etching needle. The plate is coated with ink and then wiped so that the ink remains in the incised grooves. The print is made by placing dampened paper over the plate and is then run through an etching press. As the plate is coated with ink and carefully wiped each time, every print made is original and unique. The plate also wears down very quickly during printing therefore only small editions of drypoint prints can be made.
Clare also transfers the lively drawings taken directly from her sketchbook onto paper and canvas by means of screenprinting which she combines with hand-painted acrylic. Therefore every canvas is an individual piece in itself.
Clare also teaches weekend screenprint courses at West Yorkshire Print Workshop in Mirfield.

Clare has also produced a range of new work on the unique Victorian ‘model’ village of Saltaire in Yorkshire (World Heritage site). The United Reformed Church is one of Britain’s most precious and unique examples of Italianate architecture which Clare has interpreted in her own individual style.
Clare has also been specially commissioned by Salts Mill in the heart of Saltaire to produce a limited edition of 199 original screenprinted cards depicting the mill. These prints are exclusive to Salts Mill.

Clare also sells a range of handmade screenprinted cards of Italy, London and New York, each one being an original signed print. Her cards are stocked in craft shops and galleries and also The Conran Shop in London.
