Meet The Artist
Pauline Meade

Printmaking is a constantly fascinating and sometimes surprising artform in that the results are not entirely predictable. Depending on the processes and materials used, a huge range of markmaking and effects is possible. At different times depending on my interests and facilities available, I have made lithographs, screenprints, etchings and relief prints. Most of my current work is relief print from lino blocks, which I make at my home studio in West Yorkshire.
My starting point is watercolour sketches made outdoors, mostly from the landscape and flora of the northern Pennines and Lake District Fells. A recent visit to Nepal with a group of artists from Cumbria has been a wonderful experience and source of new inspiration. From my sketches I develop small editions of relief prints. Each Layer of ink is printed by hand and often wiped out in certain areas which means that the edition, although similar, will not be identical. I make use of the transparency of the oil based colours to produce new colours. Prints can look quite startling in the early stages where they might for example, have large areas of yellow, to be later printed over with blues to produce different shades of green. The print gradually builds up to the final stage, and peeling off the paper after the last inking is an exciting moment for any printmaker.
