Mathematical Curves

Bristol artist, Mary Rouncefield has tried in her latest works, to express some of her complex ideas about mathematics.
What have corsets to do with maths? Well, mathematics is a discipline, which involves strict logic and rules, but which enables us to express quite complicated ideas relatively simply and elegantly. So while mathematical language can be used to describe beautiful curves, it is also very constraining. It was this constraint which led Mary to link mathematics and corsets.
.
Mary’s screen prints feature mathematical curves together with the corset- wearing ladies, whose poses echo the forms and shapes of the graphs. There are twelve prints in the series each showing a different graph. People have been so enthusiastic about these, that she has scaled some of the images down and produced a hand printed book. This book, entitled “The Older Boy’s Book of Mathematical Curves” appears in an extremely limited edition of only ten copies. The concertina format means that the pages can be opened out for display.
