Artists statement

Since childhood Helen has had a fond appreciation of nature and the surrounding countryside. She trained originally as a geography teacher, taught deaf children for several years and then later studied Art and Design at York College. In 2006 Helen received funding from Arts Council England to help with her professional development. As a printmaker she now works from her studio in Selby, North Yorkshire.
Helen’s inspiration comes mainly from the plants she discovers when walking her dog, in the fields and woodlands near her home. As living sculptures they provide an ever changing source of ideas and images. She tries to find the odd and unusual amongst the ordinary and familiar. Helen enjoys the freedom printmaking offers to explore and experiment. Her designs evolve from sketchbook studies and hope to capture the essence of plants their intricacy and simplicity. Each design is then hand-cut carefully into lino or wood to produce a relief print.
